Trying to be better and baking the same cake

I started a food blog to be better cook, to learn new things, to make better photos. And it works. I managed to over come my fear of yeast cakes. I grew my own bread starter (and I haven’t killed it yet). But there is still a lot of to learn. One of my targets is to eat more local and seasonal products. My guru is Bea. She lives in Switzerland and is the master of local, seasonal eating. One look at her blog and you know exactly what is in season, she shops at local farms. She is also the biggest pumpkin fun I know, just check her photos here.

I grow up in small town. My grandma used to breed chickens. My parents have quite big garden, where they would grow almost anything from onions, carrots, cabbage, green beans, tomatoes, apples, plums, strawberries, currants, gooseberries, etc. So I would always eat seasonally, well I would even try to rebel against it sometimes. Especially if you eat a bowl of strawberries fourth week in the row, because sometimes you dream about something else, like chocolate. I would be more than happy now with these amounts of fruits and veggies. I would have known solutions like strawberry ice cream, strawberry tiramisu, strawberry cheesecake, strawberry jam, or maybe strawberry vodka. Probably I would be so tired that I would have strawberries dreams as well, but the possibilities are endless.

But I’m away from home, in different country. I don’t have a garden. The climate is different. We moved so even the neighborhood is different. It’s time to find new places to shop and fight the bad habits.
We went to visit local market.We’ve got lovely French baguette, Italian pesto and pasta, delicious Irish cheese, but when we checked fruits and veggies they were almost all from Spain, Holland or other places. Only greens were from Ireland. I couldn’t even find Irish strawberries. Are they out of season?
I still need a guide that will inspire me and teach me what are the best bits in season. Where are you my Irish version of Bea? I need enliven my diet, eat more veggies.

Anyway because I felt it’s time for some nice summery cake I bought lovely Spanish plums.

I thought I will introduce you to a new recipe but I end up doing the same cake as last year. It is ready in no time and you can throw any fruits you have – blueberries, plums, strawberries, apples. Almonds will add a little bit of crunch.
