Deciding what Christmas cookies you want to make is a hard work. I don’t want them to be too plain as I spend a bit of time making them. I don’t want them to be too time consuming as there quite bit of them. I want to make something special. And I like trying new recipes, so even though there were quite a few good recipes, I decided to try something new.

Since last year’s Blogger Cookie Swap rose water cookies were on my mind.

I must say I’m a little bit disappointed with rose water not coming enough, but I blame my rose water for it. But if you want to be on a safe side, you may want to add a tiny bit more.

You will love them anyway as they are super easy to make. They look like little snowballs, so they are perfect for Christmas. There is just enough crunch from walnuts and the melt in mouth texture is lovely.

Cardamom and rose water tea cookies

Makes: Makes 24

Cardamom and rose water tea cookies
Recipe adapted from In sock monkey slippers

  • 114g butter, room temperature
  • 50g icing sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 tsp rose water
  • 130g plain flour
  • 160g walnuts, finely chopped
  • 3/4 tsp cardamom
  • Plus extra icing sugar for rolling
Preheat an oven to 170°C/150°C fan.
Beat the butter, icing sugar, the vanilla extract and rose water in a large bowl.
Stir in flour, walnuts and cardamom until dough holds together.
Shape the dough into walnut-size balls.
Place them on parchment lined baking sheet leaving some space between.
Bake for around 10 minutes or until they just start to get some colour on the very edges.
Cool slightly on wire rack.
Roll warm cookies in the icing sugar; cool on wire rack.
